Attractive Colorful Shipping Container Dormitories

Located on the Utrecht University campus in Utrecht, Netherlands, the shipping container dormitories were built as a solution to an overwhelming shortage of student housing.

Each unit is painted in a brilliant color, making the complex seem more like a work of modern art than a place for college kids to live.

While we’ve seen other shipping container student housing before, Utrecht’s version is slightly different because the containers themselves seem to have been modified further than what we typically see.

For one thing, the sides of the containers are smooth. In addition, the end of each unit where the window is has been cut so that the top and bottom are slanted rather than straight.

The small detail gives the complex a much more finished look and creates a separation between the units.
